Message in a Bottle

Here’s a heartwarming story I read on Facebook. This Key Colony Beach resort owner in Florida named Judi was walking on the sand one morning picking up the junk that was washed ashore when she found a bottle with a message in it. Besides a note, it had what she thought was some sand. And two $1 bills. Judi opened the bottle to find that what was inside was not sand – but the ashes of a man named Gordon from Tennessee. He had died leaving his wife of 70 years in grief. Since Gordon loved to travel, his widow sent him traveling in a bottle with a note and money for whoever found Gordon to call and tell her where he had reached.

Judi was struck by the similarity to the story in Nicholas Sparks’s romantic novel ‘Message In A Bottle’. In which a girl named Theresa finds a message in a bottle along the shore. It was from a man who deeply loved his wife and lost her. Theresa slowly begins to fall in love with this stranger and embarks on a journey to find him. Gordon’s travels had so far been in the Atlantic Ocean around Florida. He started at Big Pine Key, an island in Florida Keys, and then went to Islamorada, a village down the coast known for coral reefs. Where someone found him, added a note, and sent Gordon traveling again.

Now he had reached Judi’s resort in Key Colony Beach, a Florida municipality whose population was just 800-odd. Judi called Gordon’s widow in Tennessee who was excited to know of his travels. Then Judi put Gordon’s ashes in a rum bottle to add a little fun to his trip because sailors drink rum. She added another dollar in case Gordon traveled far and a long distance call needed to be made to Tennessee. Then Judi had a memorial service at her resort and a small party on the beach to celebrate Gordon’s life before she sent him on his way again.
