Good old Vicks VapoRub – last thing at night

What’s the last thing you do before turning in every night? I reach for the little blue Vicks VapoRub bottle on my bedside table. It’s been like a ritual with me for decades. Lightly, with forefinger and thumb, I scoop out little of the mentholated ointment (some call it a balm) and gently apply it on my neck, nose, forehead, eyelids and even dab it behind the ears like ladies do with perfume.

It’s funny but rituals are like that, they are religious if you follow them they work. Vicks does that for me. It produces deep and sound sleep. Its powerful medicated vapors kick in immediately and last for hours. The next morning I am raring to go. Of course, billions of people around the world get undisturbed sleep without Vicks, but I like to think Vicks produces meditative, healing sleep.

I know it’s a topical medicine for coughs and colds, throat irritation, fever in the head, chest congestion. But people also use Vicks for relief from aches and pains of muscles and joints. My grandmother passed on the habit to me. She had a staunch faith in the virtues of Vicks. It was her medicine for everything. Even toothaches. I gave it to my grandfather once saying it was Brylcream and he used it on his hair.

It works in layers. The menthol in Vicks acts first. Then the eucalyptus oil and camphor. Making for easier, deep, and rhythmic breathing. There’s also cedar leaf oil, petrolatum, nutmeg oil, thymol, and turpentine oil. I don’t know what they are. But together, I believe they reduce inflammation and infection, heal the skin, reduce stress, improve blood circulation. Vicks has been my family medicine for hundred years. Try it and see.
