A pinwheel I bought on Carter Road for 20 rupees is stuck in one of my potted plants on the window ledge at home. Although I’m not sure why I did it, I thought it was only proper to buy the pinwheel when I saw it twirling colorfully in the breeze on that coastal road then.
I saw happy, carefree youngsters running with pinwheels against the sea air and remembered a poem. A part of the poem said the only time we ran, not seeking or chasing anything, was when we ran while holding the pinwheel in our hand. I couldn’t recall doing anything like that before, but the hawker selling the pinwheels convinced me that I couldn’t live another day without one.
So I brought my pinwheel home and placed it in the pot next to the window. And it’s been there ever since, merrily spinning away with a soft whispering sound, making me wonder if the tradition that if you hold a pinwheel up to the wind, it will take away all your troubles is real. All of your misery, pain and hurt are collected by the stick in your palm and transferred to the colored pinwheel. When the wind blows and rotates the pinwheel, all of this is washed away and released into the breeze.
In Bob Dylan’s 1962 song ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ which discusses peace, war, and freedom, he argues that most answers to life’s concerns are either there in front of you or as intangible as the wind.
I’m not sure about it. But I’m tempted to take up my pinwheel and lean out the window, holding it in the breeze, just to see if it works and if anything magical happens.
