When Wodehouse was a security threat at Taloja Jail

One of the funniest things I read this week was about P. G. Wodehouse. And it wasn’t even out of one of his brilliant books. It seems an undertrial at the Taloja Jail asked for a copy of Wodehouse’s ‘The World of Jeeves and Wooster’. Now jail authorities can be notoriously narrow-minded when giving in to the requests made by prisoners. Food from home is the most common and it is firmly turned down. This poor person, a human rights activist no less, was denied because the jail authorities in their wisdom decided the book by the English author and humorist was a “security threat” to their institution. Seriously.

The undertrial didn’t find it funny at all. He dragged the Taloja Jail authorities to the Bombay High Court. Where a division bench of their lordships was amused by the case. Indeed, they found it “comical” that a classic by Wodehouse was being described as a security risk by the jail authorities. Naturally, they saw no merit in the denial. The book was there. And the undertrial must no doubt be rolling on the floor of his cell with his sides splitting with laughter over the antics of Jeeves and Wooster. I can picture the mystified faces of the humorless jail guards. Makes me want to dust my ‘Jeeves Omnibus’ by Wodehouse lying on the bookshelf and start reading it all over again immediately.
