Forget what you learned in school. In the New Normal, the idiom has changed. I understand that it is now too many cooks can improve a soup. Especially Master Chefs of different culinary schools. In Mumbai, the soup is on the boil. The pan has been simmering for over two months. The original ingredients were suicide as well as murder. And the man stirring this pot was the simple-minded Mumbai policeman.
But the greedy diners, who want variety on their plate every day, had him rudely elbowed aside for being slow and witless. A more qualified Chef de Cuisine was brought from Delhi’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Mumbai has its own CBI kitchen; but the chefs from here were not to be trusted. They lacked Delhi’s genius. And their recipe might be same as the Mumbai Police’s.
To the pot, the CBI added suspense and intrigue as they stirred the controversies raised by differing suspects, a questionable post-mortem and forensics operation, and a challenging crime scene. Financial irregularity would be an exciting add-on, they thought, and invited a Chef de Partie from Delhi’s Enforcement Directorate (ED), even though Mumbai has an Economics Offences Wing (EOW).
And now the soup was bubbling. Suspense was its main ingredient. Spices like lies, fraud, forgery, sex, theft, mental harassment, confinement, as well as paranormal activity, schizophrenia, gave it the flavour of mystery. But something was lacking. Yes, drugs! A Soupier from Delhi’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was summoned, even though Mumbai has an Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC).
Finally, the soup is ready. Not a clear consommé. But a broth, thick and murky. Is it a hotchpotch of fact and evidence that citizens hungry for justice demand? Or a concoction of falsification and contrivance that gluttonous politicians ordered? A Taste-Tester of Delhi’s (not Mumbai’s) National Investigation Agency (NIA) who only samples terrorism could tell. The lid on this pot is waiting to be lifted…
