Outside, it is Bhutta weather!

Outside, it is full-on bhutta weather. Bhutta is what our society ladies at their afternoon high tea parties snootily call corn on the cob. It is one of the monsoon’s great attractions. Evenings when the skies open up, and there’s a high tide lashing the coast, you will find me searching the rain-swept and wind-blown Carter Road promenade for the bhuttawala with his sizzling brazier roasting corn under a torn umbrella. Marine Drive and Worli Seaface, Mumbai’s other seafronts, have gone to the dogs with the Coastal Road Project. Carter Road is where I find him.

I am not one of your hearty let’s-get-wet-in-the-rain types. I don’t find this exciting anymore. You have be a poet, a teenager, or madly in love to enjoy running about in the rain. Five minutes of this romantic misadventure assures you of congestion in the chest, cold in the head, and an ache in the bones for the rest of the rains. But for the bhuttawala I will step out. I locate him by the aroma of the smoke. I check the tenderness of his corn with my thumbnail, then have it roasted, brushed with lime, and sprinkled with chili powder.

I suppose I could buy bhutta at the grocers. Or one of those fancy gourmet stores. Some call it American Corn. Ears of freshly-plucked maize whose kernels are soft, juicy, and protected by green husks. It is used to make Sweet Corn Soup at home. I am not in favor of that. If all of us start making Sweet Corn Soup what will the poor neighborhood Chinese takeaway do! But roasting bhutta at home on the gas is not the same as having bhutta done outdoors on coal by one of the wet and windy seafronts. Home is for coffee and hot buttered toast. Do you agree?
