Ek Tha Tiger &#8211; Shiv Sena

The Election Commission is tasked with deciding who bags the Shiv Sena’s bow and arrow symbol and gets recognized as the real deal. The decimated party of a few diehards led by Uddhav Thackeray because it is the original and, well, he’s the heir of the late and great party supremo Balasaheb Thackeray? Or, the new faction of tearaway rebels that brought the original party down in a night of the long knives and installed a new Shiv Sena in Mantralaya led by dissident Eknath Shinde?

It is a tough decision. I feel sorry for Uddhav who was diddled of what he naively believes was his inheritance. There is no doubt he made a lot of mistakes when in power and those he’s trying to wipe out now by making himself available to party workers and the press and bitterly blaming a backstabber for ruining the glory of the Shiv Sena. But I hate to bring it to him that in the Assembly and Lok Sabha, numbers count, and Shinde undoubtedly has numbers in spades.

What I admire..

I also admire Shinde for realizing which way the wind was blowing and gathering support from the rank and file of the Shiv Sena, from grassroots workers and shakha leaders to Corporator, MLAs, and MP. Uddhav might be the original Shiv Sena but Shinde’s party has its voice and muscle. Most of Shiv Sena’s functionaries are with him which means they either disliked and distrusted Uddhav so much or were paid to do so. Either way, they are in power and they are also the Shiv Sena.

I am not so interested in who gets the bow and arrow symbol as much as what they will do with it. What we are witnessing now is the politics of vendetta. Every major decision taken by the Uddhav government when the same Shinde was in its fold is now being overturned by the rebel urged on by a resurgent, unforgiving Devendra Fadnavis. I doubt even Balasaheb Thackeray would recognize either of the Shiv Senas today. They are so different from the party he launched in the 1960s.
