The little things…

I meditate. I talk to God. And sometimes I like sitting by myself in splendid isolation. It acts like a balm on a soul that has survived the day’s challenges. Last night, as a chilly breeze lowered the mercury further, I did just that on my terrace. Gratefully sipping a hot brandy. Smoking a cigar. My phone is off. Listening to music. Enjoying the cold. And watching the lights in the homes around me going off as the city went to bed. In 2023, one of my resolutions is to do whatever it takes to bring me contentment and peace.

Remember this, you are responsible for your own happiness. So do the things that make your heart sing with joy. Make you glad to be alive. However small they are. It is the little things that matter. If the world doesn’t like it, or is not in harmony with your actions, well – let the world go and eat cake. The world doesn’t owe you a living. You make your own life. Moreover, live it in a way that brings you joy. The brandy and cigar were making that magic happen for me.

Sure, I know that drinking and smoking can kill. Well, one thing or another has to. It can just well be old age, illness, and loneliness. It is my experience that the virtuous often die early and the ungodly live forever. Tomorrow is promised to no one. So make the most of today. Like I was doing. Watching the night flights taking off. The lights in the aircraft probing the dark starlit sky. A large bat swooped out of the night to get a closer look at me. I don’t know what is Nirvana. But I was close to it. The little things matter…
