A dog’s best friend …

Man’s best friend is a dog. That’s known. But in yesterday’s Times, on the front page, was this heartwarming gem of a story on how a man can also be a dog’s best friend. And savior. A Juhu family’s pet Maltese named Waffle was suffering from a rare and fatal congenital defect called Patent Ductus Arteriosus. It was sapping the life out of Waffle. Making the poor animal reluctant to step out for walks. Keeping him listless and fatigued all the time. The family named Wankawalla that was Waffle’s pet parent, also the best friend was advised to take him to the UK where a non-invasive operation could be performed to correct the defect. In India, it meant a tricky open heart surgery with challenging administering of anesthesia whose success had little chance. The Wankawallas, bless their noble caring hearts, were prepared to go to the UK. But Covid canceled their plan. And Waffle continued to die slowly.

That’s when a Mumbai veterinary cardiologist suggested that the Wankawallas call in German veterinary cardiac surgeon Matthias Frank who was known to be the expert on such operations. Well, Dr. Frank flew in with his surgical team like they were on an SOS call to save an Indian VVIP. And after a 2D Echo was done on an ultrasound machine to get a close look at Waffle’s condition, they performed an open heart surgery on the animal. A ventilator is on standby if something went wrong. I don’t need to tell you the surgery was a success. But what I liked best about the story was that the Wankawallas made absolutely no mention of the tremendous cost they must have borne to get the German surgeon and his team to Mumbai. All they said was, “We are glad to see Waffle full of life and mischief again.” I wish the dog and family many happy years of togetherness with their best friend.
