When the Earth quakes before Nature’s fury

I think of all-natural disasters, earthquakes are the most horrific. They are like Nature’s revenge against mankind. A terrible vengeance that leaves in their wake thousands dead. Homes and property were demolished and razed to the ground. Fires breaking out. People were homeless and defenseless, left out in the cold with only the clothes on their backs, wailing in disbelief, searching hopelessly for survivors from their families. Rummaging among the rubble for familiar possessions. Everywhere, the scene of destruction and of death. Nature’s merciless attack on people in their beds. Apartments pulled down. Entire townships are left in a heap of ruins. The rescue workers, gaunt and grim-faced, as grief-stricken as the victims, searched among the debris for any sign of life, restraining heartbroken survivors from hampering the operations by joining in the search. A baby crying somewhere. Separated from its family forever. Heartrending scenes of people’s lives and carefully built-up homes lying in the dust. I don’t know why earthquakes happen. I don’t want to know, too. What I would like to know is how all those families displaced in Turkey and Syria are going to pick up the pieces of their lives from among the ruins. It’s like starting life all over again with nothing on the plus side. Like refugees. Not easy to do at any age. And the countries, already torn asunder by long and bitter wars, are now forced to fight the battles within. Starting with burying their dead. Following the tragedy on TV, I was left with images of people out in the harsh cold appealing to their Gods. For what, I don’t know. The Gods had not stopped Nature from wickedly taking everything away from them. How would They give it all back?
