Amidst the tranquil embrace of slumber, while our weary bodies sought respite, a celestial response to our whispered entreaties unfolded. The firmament parted its veils, cascading an unexpected prelude to the impending monsoon—a gentle downpour that graced our world, cloaking it in a tempered coolness. Devoid of fanfare, absent were the resounding clashes of thunder and the crackling dance of lightning, as if the monsoon itself sought to test the very ground it would conquer at a later hour. Alas, I missed this fleeting spectacle, for when I awoke, a tapestry of fallen petals from the Gulmohur tree outside my window adorned the earth.
The Gulmohur, a tree whose existence is ephemeral, bore witness to the heavens’ lament, weeping for the flowers it relinquished in the deluge of the night. This morn, as I cast my gaze upon the world beyond my pane, the courtyard unfurled like a resplendent inferno of orange. The air was laden with moisture, as though the Gulmohur, in its bereavement, shed tears for its lost offspring, baptized by the rain’s touch.
To possess a window that frames the outside world is truly one of life’s blessings. Mesmerized, I can peer through its transparent portal for hours on end, savoring the theater of existence. The felines basking in the warm sunlight, oblivious to the passage of time. The emissaries of commerce—Amazon and Zomato’s stalwart deliverers, who seemingly reside upon the staircase—flitting to and fro, ensuring the city’s provisions reach their intended abodes. The milkman, dhobi, and postman, each weaving their way through the tapestry of routines. The creaking of the gate, a sonorous herald accompanying every arrival and departure. Meanwhile, the tenacious Gulmohur, adorned in its resplendent raiment, persists in its summer duty of illuminating the urban landscape with its flamboyant orange blaze. Aptly christened the “Flame of the Forest,” though the whimsical notion of likening Mumbai to a forest elicits a mirthful chuckle, at best.
