Amidst the sweltering heat and beads of perspiration that cling to my skin, one would expect a chilled beer in a frosted glass to be my chosen libation for this evening. However, today is no ordinary day; it is World Whisky Day. Although I’m not usually bound by tradition, there is something special about this occasion that demands an exception. Tonight, I shall raise a short glass of whisky to my lips, indulging in the spirit of the moment.

As for the whisky itself, there is no room for doubt. I shall reach for the bottle that is already open—Johnnie Red, the world’s best-selling blended Scotch Whisky. It is a familiar choice, one that has captivated the taste buds of many. Alas, its popularity has also attracted duplicity, particularly in my homeland of India. It saddens the creators of Johnnie Walker that the number of spurious bottles of Red Label “produced” in India surpasses the entire annual production at their Scottish distillery. Hence, I refrain from acquiring my beloved Scotch locally and instead rely on friends who can procure it from Duty-Free stores at international airports.

To my surprise, I recently discovered that International Whiskey Day is also celebrated on March 27th. Whiskey, with an ‘e,’ refers to the grain spirits distilled in Ireland and America. On the other hand, whisky, without an ‘e,’ is synonymous with the grain spirits hailing from Scotland, Canada, and Japan. Though I am no connoisseur, the distinction seems rather trivial, as both libations possess an allure that transcends borders. Regrettably, I missed the opportunity to partake in the festivities of International Whiskey Day, which I could have commemorated with the likes of Jameson, the exceptional Irish Whiskey, or the iconic Jack Daniel’s from America. Yet, tonight, I shall devoutly observe World Whisky Day, raising a toast with my cherished companions—Red Label and a fine cigar—joining my friend Ashish Bhasin, the esteemed Cigar Czar of India, in spirit.

Ashish celebrates this occasion in grandeur, enticing guests with an evening of Indri-Trini, the award-winning Indian Single Malt, accompanied by the world’s finest cigars and delectable Vietnamese cuisine. Though I find myself distanced from Delhi’s lively atmosphere, I will honor his gracious invitation in my own way, offering a heartfelt toast to Ashish, fellow whisky enthusiasts, and the cherished moments we share. Tonight, I shall revel in the symphony of flavors, savoring each sip and puff, as I pay homage to the enduring legacy of whisky. Cheers to World Whisky Day!

Stories are the best way to communicate. If you want to know a person, know their story. You will understand the person, rather than going by the gestures and the dressing sense.
