We’re at the halfway stage of June, the official month of the monsoon, and so far there’s been little sign of the rains. The weatherman expects it to get active by Sunday. But I have little faith in him. He’s gone back and forth on the monsoon’s arrival date. His forecasts are uninspiring. He seldom gets it right despite his study of temperature, visibility, pressure, humidity, dew point, wind speed, precipitation, sunrise and sunset, direction and chill, real feel (whatever is that?) and freezing level. His ground
instruments at the weather bureau and satellites above on the basis of whose images he is able to make his reports and graphs, don’t seem to be helping hm. I wonder what he does when the rains have finished with Mumbai. I rely on the MRF Rain Man. He was in the newspapers this morning with his red umbrella. Welcoming the monsoon but
wisely not predicting Rain Day. Which means it is some days away. He used to appear on hoardings. Holding a tyre overhead. His barrel chest and biceps bulging. Motorists have no time to admire the hoardings. They are engaged in looking out for
potholes on the roads. So MRP spends its Rain Day adverting budget on TV commercials and newspapers. I like the MRF Rain Man. He is as symbolic as R. K. Laxman’s Common Man, the Air India Maharaja, the Amul Girl and Asian Paints boy. Lyrical and imaginative. When he says the monsoon is here, he means the
season has arrived. The rains are coming.
