I’m a cigar smoker, and I can tell you with my hand on my heart that Shah Rukh Khan smoking a cigar while performing breathless action and death-defying stunts in his new film ‘Jawan’ is the epitome of swag. He is not a cigar smoker, I know. He chain smokes cigarettes. So the cigar was an act. But he nailed it.

Scenes in ‘Jawan’ were just as effortlessly cool and stylish as everything else he did in the double role. He nailed those scenes like a champ, making them look easier and more natural than any action sequence Schwarzenegger or Stallone has ever pulled off in a Hollywood thriller while munching on a stogie. And they are confirmed cigar aficionados. On-screen and off. So, does that mean SRK is the better actor? Obviously, he is.

I saw ‘Jawan’ on opening day, the first show. My job requires me to. And the older I get, the more I am beginning to enjoy Bollywood films just because I have accepted that I must suspend all beliefs and drop expectations and go just with the intention of watching entertaining cinema.

I’m not a critic, so I can’t say whether ‘Jawan’ is good cinema or not. I’m just a member of the janta, the audience. And like every other paying customer in the packed auditorium yesterday, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Jawan’ because I went to see SRK. They were all his fans. I was not. But I know the man. And I admire the actor in him.For the price of their ticket, SRK could have just as well been doing the Bharatanatyam, but the fans got paisa vasool.

My advice is go and see ‘Jawan’. Written and directed by legendary Tamil filmmaker Atlee. I think this is the first time the South has got it right with Bollywood. And if you thought SRK had come back with ‘Pathaan’ – then with ‘Jawan’ he shows that despite his 57 years he is here to stay.

Jawan is an absolute cinematic treat, top-notch from start to finish. All you need to do is leave your opinions at the door for 169 minutes and sit back for the ride of your life. It’s a mass masala film at its finest, with not a single dull moment. And while it may have its flaws, who cares when there’s twice as much SRK on screen? He’s irrepressibly witty, utterly charming, and there’s nothing he can’t do and get right. It’s his film, and the box office already knows it.

Stories are the best way to communicate. If you want to know a person, know their story. You will understand the person, rather than going by the gestures and the dressing sense.
