The Lalbaugcha Raja during Ganeshotsav is a sight to behold. Its towering grandeur, intricate detailing, and vibrant colours instantly mesmerise all who see it. You are reminded, in its presence, of God.
For as long as I can remember, this majestic Ganpati has been a part of my life. I grew up in the shadow of the Lalbaugcha Raja, a mere temple bell and prayer away from his protective embrace. And I cannot tell you with what fervour I look forward to Ganeshotsav every year. Just so that I could renew my faith in this miraculous idol of Lord Ganesh that has been Mumbai’s pride since 1934. It is believed to answer every prayer. And fulfil every hope.
Devotees from all walks of life flock to the Lalbaugcha Raja, seeking its blessings. Ministers, movie stars, and cricketers alike bow down before its towering form. I bow my head in respect and say thank you to the Lalbaugcha Raja for every blessing I have received in the year gone by – that’s all.
Despite the riotous din of the Ganeshotsav celebrations outside, which reached unprecedented decibels every year, and the devotional music blaring from the other pandals in the vicinity, I shut my ears to it all. Or the Bollywood songs leading processions with revellers dancing on the roads. Undisturbed by the blast of firecrackers that add to the racket. Despite the impatient hands tugging at my arms and back, I stood my ground, unmindful of the serpentine queue of devotees who had waited for hours in rain and shine for a glimpse of the Lalbaugcha Raja.
But in that minute, I am overcome by a deep meditative silence. And a sense of tranquillity, hope and positivity that I just cannot describe. It’s that time of the year again…
