Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Brigitte Bardot, and Raquel Welch were the only hourglass that adults used to describe, which I knew as a child. Since I hadn’t seen their flicks, I guessed what the word ‘hourglass’ meant. Then a bachelor uncle died young. He left my family a stack of 1960s Playboy magazines. Beautiful queen centerfolds. It seems I grew up rapidly after that.
I recently found a missing West German hourglass in my mother’s old teakwood almirah (love that word!). My mother has been with me since Covid began. Her home is locked. She’s 90 and has dementia. So she doesn’t remember the hourglass. Or how she got it. Very frustrating. I now own the hourglass. After removing its yellowing and dulling plastic casing, I mounted it on my bookshelf. It’s lovely. A thin neck connects two fragile glass bulbs vertically, allowing fine-grain pink sand to flow between them.
I’m old enough to know that hourglass figures have huge breasts, slim waist, and broad hips. Wikipedia says 8% of women are born with this type. Many Bollywood actresses do. I’m not sure if it was Photoshop, cosmetic surgery, or organic. Sand moves from bulb to bulb in my hourglass in 5 minutes. The sands of time, as the old saying goes, are running out.
