Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions, Is Your Hospital Prepared?
In times of heightened tensions, hospitals play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. Now is the time to review and reinforce your hospital’s emergency protocols to ensure swift, coordinated, and effective action when it’s needed most.
Preparedness Before the Drill (Pre-4:00 PM)
• Inform all department heads about the drill schedule and expectations.
• Conduct a quick briefing with staff about the air raid siren signals and procedures.
• Ensure emergency exits, evacuation routes, and signage are clearly visible.
• Prepare and test backup power and emergency lighting systems.
• Ensure all oxygen supply and critical care units are backed by UPS/generators.
• Assign floor marshals or safety officers for each ward or department.
During the Drill (At 4:00 PM)
• Announce the drill internally using the public address (PA) system.
• Turn off or dim all external and unnecessary internal lights (simulate blackout).
• Close all windows and cover with blackout curtains or sheets.
• Evacuate non-critical areas (OPD, admin blocks) as per protocol.
• Move mobile patients and visitors to designated safe zones or shelters.
• Ensure critical patients in ICUs and OTs are not disturbed but are secured.
• Maintain a log of drill activities and any issues encountered.
Post-Drill
• Conduct a debriefing session with staff and note observations.
• Fill out feedback forms or reports requested by authorities.
• Review the hospital’s Emergency Preparedness SOP and suggest improvements.
