This is a whimsical monsoon, all right. After a month of no-show, just when we were beginning to worry about the plunging lake levels and knock on the Rain God’s door, it revived suddenly last evening. Rolling up its sleeves, the monsoon got down to work, and overnight it left Mumbai wringing wet and battered. But also clean and green, and breathing freely and easily.
As if to make up for time lost, the monsoon has left an ominous canopy of dark rain clouds peering down at the city. The weatherman, who has been at his observatory window from late afternoon yesterday, scanning the skies, speaks optimistically of heavy, incessant rains till Friday. Buoyantly, he’s issued an orange alert for Mumbai for the rest of the week.
Every year, it’s the same story. Either the rain arrives early, or on time, and then it mischievously goes into hiding. The summer, cheered by this erratic behaviour, keeps giving us sweltering days and sweaty nights. Then the rain returns. It is a season that enjoys festivals. Janmashtami, Ganeshotsav and Navratri it will celebrate with us. Diwali, it exits with a loud bang.
