All we need is a small drop of courage from within

“Sometimes, all it takes to change your life is a small drop of courage.”

There are days when work feels effortless, and there are days when simply getting through the day feels like an achievement. Many professionals experience moments when they question whether they are working out of passion or merely fulfilling expectations. This reflection is not uncommon in today’s fast-paced corporate world.

This story is about those quiet moments of self-reflection, the pressures of corporate life, and the courage it takes to choose purpose over routine.

A Typical Morning That Sparked an Important Question

It was a rainy summer morning, and I was sitting at my desk, scrolling through yet another office document. Like many working professionals, I was having one of those days when motivation seemed difficult to find.

Despite my lack of enthusiasm, I continued working because deadlines, responsibilities, and expectations demanded it.

As I looked around the office, I noticed everyone immersed in their own tasks. Some were preparing presentations, others were attending meetings, while many were trying to meet demanding targets.

A simple question entered my mind:

How many of us are genuinely doing work that we love?

For many, work provides financial security, stability, and growth. Yet, somewhere along the journey, passion often gets replaced by pressure.

The Corporate Rat Race Begins Earlier Than We Realise

People often believe the corporate rat race begins after graduation.

In reality, it starts much earlier.

As children, we are encouraged to score higher marks, perform better than our classmates, secure admission into prestigious colleges, and eventually find successful careers.

One competition leads to another.

School becomes college.

College becomes employment.

Employment becomes promotions, appraisals, targets, and endless performance reviews.

Without even realising it, we spend years chasing the next milestone, believing happiness lies just beyond the next achievement.

Are We Living or Simply Meeting Expectations?

Modern corporate life rewards productivity, efficiency, and measurable results. While these qualities are important, they sometimes leave little room for creativity, curiosity, and personal fulfilment.

Many people quietly carry dreams of becoming writers, artists, entrepreneurs, musicians, teachers, travellers, or social changemakers.

However, responsibilities, financial commitments, and the fear of uncertainty often prevent those dreams from becoming reality.

The greatest challenge is rarely a lack of talent.

More often, it is a lack of courage.

Courage Is the First Step Towards Change

Choosing a different path is never easy.

Following your passion may involve uncertainty, setbacks, criticism, and temporary failures.

Yet history is filled with individuals who dared to take that first step despite overwhelming challenges.

Every successful entrepreneur, artist, athlete, or innovator was once someone who simply believed in an idea when nobody else did.

Courage does not eliminate fear.

It teaches us to move forward despite it.

Sometimes, all it takes is one small decision to begin changing the direction of your life.

Success Means Different Things to Different People

Society often measures success through salary packages, promotions, luxury homes, and prestigious job titles.

But true success is deeply personal.

For some, success means financial independence.

For others, it means spending more time with family, creating meaningful work, helping others, or waking up excited about the day ahead.

There is no universal definition of success.

The only definition that matters is your own.

Keep Moving Forward

Life will always present obstacles.

There will be uncertainty, rejection, disappointment, and moments when giving up seems easier than continuing.

But every challenge also presents an opportunity to grow stronger.

As the saying goes:

“Don’t quit. You are already in pain. You are already hurt. Get a reward from it.”

The courage you build today becomes the confidence that shapes your tomorrow.

Final Thoughts

Every meaningful journey begins with a single decision.

You do not need extraordinary talent or perfect circumstances to create a fulfilling life.

Sometimes, all you need is a small drop of courage to take the first step.

Whether you choose to remain in your current career, explore a new opportunity, or simply rediscover your passion, remember that growth begins the moment you stop allowing fear to make your decisions.

Believe in yourself.

Take that first step.

Your future may be waiting just beyond your comfort zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the corporate rat race?

The corporate rat race refers to the continuous pursuit of career success through promotions, salary increases, performance targets, and professional achievements. While ambition can be rewarding, constantly chasing external success without personal fulfilment may lead to stress and burnout.

2. How do I know if I am unhappy in my corporate job?

Common signs include feeling unmotivated, constantly stressed, lacking enthusiasm for work, feeling disconnected from your purpose, and struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Reflecting on your long-term goals can help determine whether your career aligns with your aspirations.

3. Why is courage important when pursuing your passion?

Courage allows you to take meaningful action despite uncertainty or fear. Whether you want to change careers, start a business, or explore a creative passion, courage helps you move beyond self-doubt and embrace new opportunities.

4. Can I follow my passion while working a full-time job?

Yes. Many people begin pursuing their passions alongside their regular jobs. Starting small, dedicating time consistently, and gradually building your skills or business can make the transition more manageable and financially secure.

5. How can I find purpose in my career?

Finding purpose starts with understanding your values, strengths, and interests. Seek opportunities that align with what motivates you, continue learning new skills, and focus on work that creates a positive impact on yourself or others.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a
sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the
shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her
ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic
but I had to tell someone!
