“Every cyclist has a story. Mine began with a simple bicycle and turned into a lifelong passion.”
For many people, cycling is a hobby. For me, it became a way of life. What started as a childhood pastime eventually transformed into a journey of better health, self-discovery, endurance, and unforgettable experiences.
This is the story of how cycling became my first love.
My First Bicycle and the Beginning of My Cycling Journey
I received my first bicycle when I was in the seventh standard. Every afternoon after school, I would ride through the neighbourhood, even during the scorching summer heat. Those rides brought a sense of freedom that I never forgot.
Years later, in 2015, after moving to Gurgaon, I rediscovered my passion for cycling. My office was only three kilometres from my home, so instead of buying a petrol bike, I decided to commute by bicycle.
To test whether this was just nostalgia or a genuine passion, I bought an affordable Kross 26T K40 bicycle from Snapdeal. It featured a steel frame, dual suspension, and 18 gears, making it an ideal entry-level bike for daily commuting.
Little did I know that this simple decision would completely change my lifestyle.
How Cycling Improved My Health
One of the biggest surprises was the positive impact cycling had on my health.
For nearly a year, I had suffered from severe back pain caused by osteophytes in my spine. Within just two weeks of cycling regularly, the pain began to disappear.
My daily rides of six to eight kilometres for work, along with weekend rides of around fifteen kilometres, gradually improved my stamina, flexibility, and overall fitness.
More importantly, cycling gave me something I desperately needed—peace of mind.
Every morning ride felt like meditation. The cool breeze, empty roads, and quiet moments became my personal escape from everyday stress.
My First Long-Distance Cycling Challenge
As my confidence grew, so did my ambitions.
On 25 January 2015, I decided to attempt my first long-distance solo ride from Gurgaon to Dwarka.
The one-way distance was approximately 15 kilometres, which felt enormous at the time.
I completed the ride at an average speed of about 10 km/h, taking several breaks along the way. Although I was exhausted and experienced discomfort afterwards, I realised that preparation was just as important as determination.
Lessons I Learned
For longer rides, proper cycling gear makes a significant difference.
I invested in:
- Padded cycling shorts
- Cycling jersey
- Gloves
- Water bottle
- Helmet
- Cycling accessories from Decathlon
These small improvements made every ride more comfortable and enjoyable.
Joining a Cycling Group Changed Everything
One of the best decisions I made was joining Gurgaon Fun Riders (GFR).
Cycling with experienced riders pushed me to improve while introducing me to people who shared the same passion.
Every cyclist had unique stories, experiences, and advice.
As they inspired me, I slowly began creating my own cycling story.
Group rides also boosted my confidence and motivated me to ride longer distances than I ever imagined possible.
Upgrading to a Better Bicycle
Initially, my dual-suspension bicycle limited my performance on long rides.
Before investing in a better bike, I challenged myself to complete a 53-kilometre ride.
Although physically demanding, completing that ride convinced me I was ready for an upgrade.
After extensive research, I purchased a Raleigh Terrain 10, a mountain bike with a 26-inch wheel size.
The very day I bought it, I rode it approximately 41 kilometres back home to Gurgaon.
Even the bicycle shop owner was surprised.
During the first month alone, I rode over 300 kilometres, proving that my investment had been worthwhile.
My Longest Ride and Growing Passion
On 1 January 2016, when Delhi introduced the Odd-Even traffic scheme to reduce pollution, I challenged myself again.
I cycled from Mayur Vihar Phase II, covering 72 kilometres in total at an average speed of 19.2 km/h.
The atmosphere throughout the city was inspiring.
People stood along the roads supporting cleaner air, and I felt proud knowing that my bicycle represented a small contribution towards a healthier environment.
That ride became one of my most memorable experiences.
My Cycling Journey in Numbers
My progress continued year after year.
- Started cycling seriously in January 2015
- Purchased the Raleigh Terrain 10 in December 2015
- Covered 863.5 kilometres during 2015
- Rode nearly 1,500 kilometres during 2016
- Completed over 900 kilometres in the first six months of 2017
- Set a personal goal of riding 3,000 kilometres in 2017
Each kilometre strengthened both my body and my determination.
Why Cycling Became My First Love
People often ask why I am so passionate about cycling.
The answer is simple.
Cycling has given me far more than physical fitness.
It has introduced me to lifelong friendships, improved my health, increased my confidence, enhanced my work performance, and connected me with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Every ride reminds me that happiness is often found in life’s simplest moments.
The feeling of fresh air against your face during an early morning ride is something every cyclist understands.
Making Our Cities More Bicycle-Friendly
Cycling is more than a personal hobby. It can also create healthier communities.
To encourage more people to ride, our cities need:
- Dedicated cycling lanes
- Greater awareness among motorists
- Safer roads for cyclists
- Better Bike-to-Work initiatives
- Reduced air pollution
- Improved cycling infrastructure
Supporting cycling benefits both individuals and the environment.
Final Thoughts
Every passion begins with a single step—or in my case, a single pedal.
Cycling has taught me discipline, perseverance, resilience, and gratitude. It has transformed my health, broadened my horizons, and given me memories that will last a lifetime.
Whether you ride for fitness, adventure, or simply to enjoy the outdoors, every journey starts with choosing to begin.
So, dust off that bicycle, explore your surroundings, and create your own cycling story.
