A life lesson from an old Favre Leuba

On my bookshelf at home stands a vintage Favre Leuba alarm clock that I can’t remember came from where. It’s an old, hand-winding, mechanical model. With a handsome black dial, gold numbers and silver arms, and a shiny chrome body. The alarm sounds like a fire engine rushing to an emergency. I found it lying on its side in an old shoebox. Broken and forgotten.

I couldn’t recall ever seeing it before. And intrigued by its sudden appearance, I decided to get the Favre Leuba restored. But that didn’t happen for years. Clock repairers wouldn’t touch it, were challenged by Swiss technology or were dismayed by the unavailability of parts. A few valiantly had a go but returned the Favre Leuba to me beaten and apologetic.

Then I found a watch shop with an ancient whose arthritic hands were good at repairing vintage clocks. The old man received my Favre Leuba in silence. He shook it once. Then told me to collect it in five days. When I returned, the Favre Leuba was ticking away on his work table. “Tick-tock, tick-tock,” he muttered comically. “It is like your heartbeat. So give it the same care and attention.”

I have been doing that. I wind the Favre Leuba every morning. The clockwork keeps it running through the day and night till the next morning. But days I forget to wind it, when I return at night, in the dark silence of the house I hear it still ticking. As if to tell me, “Keep going. Do the extra mile when the world forgets about you. If your heartbeat is strong, you won’t run out of time!”
