2023’s final month, December, flew past quickly just like the year. A dense grey mist covered the city at daybreak. Hiding the sun. Darkening a dawn. Winter begins its relationship with the city. Having trouble staying awake due to early street lights last night. The air nips slightly. The temperature was refreshingly low. Due to overnight cold north-westerly breezes. City residents remain huddled in bedrooms, cooled by ACs. Gaining a few extra minutes of sleep. It’s hard to resist mornings like these. Some auto-rickshaw drivers sleep in their three-wheelers parked on residential highways at night.
Poor men lack beds. They are uncomfortable in the back seat of their car. Covered by blanket. They’re migrants. They have no lodging. The car is their home. They gather money and move from villages in North and Central India to buy a vehicle and start a life.
Trusting Bollywood movies. It is said that Mumbai has gold-paved roadways. Upon arrival, they realize this is untrue. People sleep on the roadways due to costly housing. At least they have cars. And nighttime blankets. It can’t be as comfortable as your bed and mine. However, they sleep justly. On mornings like this, they deserve a little extra snooze time.
