A ‘Selfiee’ with Akshay Kumar

It’s an unwritten law in photography that the person taking a selfie is always the hero of the picture. Nobody appears bigger or better. And if, as in my picture here, this person is Bollywood’s ‘Selfie King’ Akshay Kumar, then the hero becomes a superhero! I didn’t mind. I like Akshay. He just entered the Guinness Book of World Records by taking 184 selfies in 3 minutes. And if you see him in his new family entertainer ‘Selfiee’ that releases today, you will understand why he attempted and set that record. I saw it at a special screening last night and I cannot tell you when last I had such a good time at the movies.

The movie is like a fresh breath of air. Which both, Bollywood and Mumbai desperately need at the moment. It’s the Hindi remake of a huge Malayalam blockbuster named ‘Driving Licence’ starring South superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran. I’m so glad Karan Johar had the genius and courage of his convictions to remake this film as ‘Selfiee’ because how many of us would have seen or understood the Malayalam version? And sharing his confidence in the success of the Bollywood remake was Prithviraj himself – the actor’s production house in a handsome gesture joined KJo’s Dharma Productions as a co-producer.

I am no film critic. I like to watch Hindi cinema like the audience. For me what matters is whether the film entertains or not. ‘Selfiee’ does in great dollops of fun and laughter. It is “poora paisa vasool” as the front benchers will say. Akshay almost plays himself. A Bollywood superstar and darling of the masses who urgently needs a driving license to shoot in a restricted area gets embroiled in a battle of emotions and wits with a scornful and uncompromising RTO officer (played by Emraan Hashmi) who was turned down for a selfie with his hero. I won’t tell you more. See the film. Go to the theatre. Bollywood is back in business. And if you ever get a chance to take a selfie with Akshay Kumar, remember you’re just in the picture, he’s the star. The real Selfie King.
