At the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest recently, the US artistic and synchronized swimming favourite Anita Alvarez slowly sank to the bottom of the pool after losing consciousness at the end of her solo free final routine. Nobody seemed to notice. After a few seconds, her coach Andrea Fuentes, a four-time Olympic medalist, quickly scanned the pool deck and then made a split-second decision. She dove into the pool and was able to save Alvarez who was drowning.
This image should remind us of the importance of coaching and mentoring. This coach had the ability to recognize when Alvarez was under the water longer than she normally should have been. This coach had the desire to help. This coach had the willingness to save. This coach acted while others were still watching on the sidelines. A coaching relationship is one-sided. But to build a successful mentoring relationship you need trust, an acknowledgement of each other’s goals, and a commitment to helping each other grow.
We see too many young folks drowning right before us especially at work and in other walks of life, etc. We watch as many walk away while someone is taking their own life due to the pressure that comes from navigating life’s challenges. Everyone needs a helping hand. If you’re a young person that doesn’t have a mentor, find one now. If you’re a seasoned veteran and don’t have a mentee, find one now. There’s no excuse for anyone to drown.
