COVID-19 Tales When Death rides an auto to hospital…

Every day there is some picture, some story, some item on TV news that breaks my heart. Covid- related, naturally. I don’t think anyone of us can be in a shock anymore. But to be overwhelmed by grief for somebody else, and disappointed in the system, is easy. That’s what our circumstances are more than the pandemic has done to us. It’s made us grateful not to be the person we are hurting for.

Today, this heartbreaking picture was of this distraught and desperate Agra woman who administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to her husband in an auto outside the Sarojini Naidu Medical Hospital there. He was 47. He suddenly started getting breathless. Then – the same old story. No ambulance to reach the hospital. At the hospital, no bed. No oxygen. Nothing but hopelessness.

Frantically, mad with panic, chucking Covid precautions to the wind, she tried to blow life into her husband’s mouth. There comes a stage in this fight against death when if the fear is beyond the limit, and somebody of yours is slipping away, people stop being afraid. That’s what happened here in Agra. The man, gasping for breath, died on the woman’s lap in the auto. To become another statistic.

Over 3.50 lakh are testing positive daily. I wonder if they will vote for this government again. Admitting the second wave had shaken the nation is not accepting responsibility. Like a Death Row convict penitently saying all he did was kill somebody, m’lud. The Madras High Court blames the Election Commission for holding polls to five states resulting in the situation we are in. The EC should face murder charges, the HC said. What about the candidates? And those who campaigned for them?
