Delhi fog and Mumbai smog…

There’s talk about the humble face mask making a return. Not because of Covid. Right now, India is enjoying rambunctious health. Though Covid is back in China, the US, and Canada. We are being asked to consider the face mask again because of the appalling air we are breathing in currently. The AQI, which is Air Quality Index – and I don’t know how it is measured, is at 309. The day before it was 297. Anything over 200 is poor. Over 300 is very poor. But what are we to do? It is what it is. Be thankful you are not living in Delhi. Where the AQI at 407 is severe. There is a ban on all construction and demolition work in Delhi. And the Supreme Court is spending sleepless nights over the capital’s AQI.

Delhi also has mist. This is a winter phenomenon. It creeps into the city at night. Silently and stealthily. Like a burglar in the dark. And next morning, when it is thicker and denser, it becomes a fog, and it disrupts air traffic, causes traffic jams, and shuts down schools and offices. Bollywood loves mist. In soulful songs, it must show the hero chasing the heroine through misty meadows with dappled sunlight where flowers bashfully kiss in the breeze. Mumbai has smog. Which are smoke and fog. Like a haze in the sky. Caused by construction dust, waste burning, and industrial and auto emissions. Smog enters homes from under the door, through cracks in the window, leaving us with congestion in the chest and breathing problems. Hence, maybe the return of the mask.
