Guarding Miss Universe

More than I enjoy watching Indian girls from small towns and unheard-of villages participating in international beauty pageants and emerging winners, I marvel at the transformation thrust on them once they come back home. Right at the airport itself. Like Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu here on Thursday night. Escorted out by eager but grim-faced security men with keen eyes and fingers on the triggers of automatic weapons. Like somebody might snatch her from beneath their noses if they were less vigilant and lacking in their duty.

I don’t understand this razzmatazz. Does a girl, whose fame is only recent, and who if she had lost the beauty pageant abroad would not even be received at the airport, really require this? It’s not like she’s the Team India captain triumphantly returning to riotous crowds with the World Cup. I’ve seen Union Ministers and State Governors get away with lesser security. She’s not even like Miss Kangana Ranaut who earned her Y-Plus Security through acerbic wit on social media and majestically flaunts it at the airport.

I like that one of our girls has won an international beauty contest as Miss Universe. Certainly, she deserves to be fussed over when she returns. With paparazzi and flashing cameras. Reporters (from the media house that sent her which will be the only one covering her return) thrust mikes into her face. More than that is excessive. Next, it will be a ticker-tape parade. I am as quick an admirer of beauty as anybody else. But take away the Miss Universe sash, remove the security men, and what’s left of Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu is just a pretty face with a lovely smile and nice legs. And Mumbai has plenty of those already.
