Mumbai is like Humpty Dumpty A very popular childhood school rhyme we all learnt as children fits the situation in our very own Amchi Mumbai. The line in particular, All the King’s horses and all the King’s men could not put Humpty together again. For a few months, Mumbaikars have been facing very poor-quality air. Many agencies and authorities have been struggling to get the city to breathe freely but it seems to get more difficult. Both the State and Central Governments, their pollution control boards and health departments and the BMC have failed and it has been an ineffective try. If all this was not enough, the Bombay High Court has sprung into action and has joined the ongoing ruckus and has been hearing anguished petitions and passing stricter laws against Diwali fireworks. The weatherman is relieved that he is not a part of the drama. But all said and done, their planning and efforts have gone in vain as the city still looms under a thick toxic haze hanging above, covering the skyline and stubbornly refusing to dissipate. And we continue to choke over a poor quality of air which even Delhi finds alarming. Ages back over suburban grounds were known as gas chambers. But today Mumbai has become one. People get confused in identifying what is mist, smog and fog. Mist is a winter phenomenon. It creeps in silently overnight like a burglar would do in the dark. It disrupts traffic, causing traffic jams, and making visibility low and shutting down schools and offices. People fall sick with chest congestion, face breathing problems, cold in the head and giving them bone aches. The way Bollywood portrays this, the reality is far from being true. There is nothing romantic about mist. Only Bollywood movies show the hero chasing the heroine in the meadows and singing some song. On the other hand smog is a combination of smoke and fog. Fog like mist happens in winter. Both are clouds made of condensed water vapour. Because fog is denser it makes visibility even poorer. Mumbai is hit by smog, pollution caused by the construction dust, smoke from waste burning, auto and Industrial emissions. Whether it is mist, fog or smog, the Air Quality Index (AQI) goes through the roof. In Mumbai, since few months the air quality is become worse than Delhi and is has become very unhealthy and poor. Winters is still far off. People are wearing Covid masks. Irrespective of what Mumbaikars face the festivsl celebration will just be the same.

Stories are the best way to communicate. If you want to know a person, know their story. You will understand the person, rather than going by the gestures and the dressing sense.

Do you also have a story that you want the world to know, then share it with us at submitstories.storyofsouls@gmail.com.

We are also giving mileage to young students who can be our young authors by  sharing their already written content with us, that will go live with their name credits.
