I am not so old that I have forgotten the simple joys of my childhood. Among these, if I think back, were Phantoms Sweet Cigarettes and Poppins. Every kid knew what these confections were. And every kid squandered meager pocket money on stocking up on them. So I was most amused when Amazon Prime Video in its wisdom sent me a goodies hamper that included Phantoms and Poppins to launch its web show ‘Cinema Marte Dum Tak’. I understand this is a docu-series on the pulp moviemakers of the 1990s. Though what sweets of the 1970s have got to do with moviemakers of the 1990s I have no idea. Who am I to judge a gift horse, though? I accepted the sweets with childish delight. Friends of my generation are jealously working out ways already to separate me from them.
In the 70s, it was manly for a boy to strut around with a Phantom Sweet Cigarette in the mouth and a Poppins roll in the back pocket. Phantoms weren’t tobacco-stuffed cigarettes, of course. Just white candy sticks of chalky sugar with a red tip that looked like the real thing. They were sickly sweet. I was addicted to them, because of all the masked and caped comic book superheroes back then – the Phantom was my favorite. And as for Poppins, every one of its colorful candies was like a mouthful of crunchy, tangy fruit juice. Dentists have built up practices on tooth decay because of them. But still, grateful thanks to Amazon is due. I will enjoy the sweets but not the web show because in the 70s I was eating Phantoms and Poppins – not watching pulp movies.
