June 17th, that one day of the month holds a special and close place in my heart for one reason, it always rained. No matter how the weather had been the date the rain God showed up, without fail. It is also my Dad’s birthday. He expired in 1996. I don’t remember this day as his birth anniversary. For me, he is very much with me in my heart. There is not a day when I don’t think of him. I celebrate June 17th is his birthday. In the last quarter of 2022, I missed him the most. That year ICC To World Cup was played in
Australia in October. And the FIFA World Cup was happening in Qatar in November. Cricket and Football were Dad’s favorite sports which he followed closely and never missed a chance to see the matches. The World Cup was his most liked event. The line telecast which happened between midnight and down witnessed a lot of activity at home. Dad always set up the night and made it fun and entertaining.
He would make hot coffee and fill it up in the flask, and he would settle down comfortably in his pajamas to enjoy the matches. This year he is not around and I will do anything to have him around and share this moment with him. Rain or Shine, Dad, made sure to spend his birthday at home with his family. He was simple, hardworking, and far from any sophisticated habits. He found happiness in simple
things in life like Lifebuoy Soap, Old Monk Rum, Pananma Cigarettes, old spice aftershave, Brlycream hair tonic, and a typical middle-class man’s indulgence. But on his birthday he was particular and made sure to open a foreign liquor bottle and preferably Scotch. On one occasion, as an editor, I was gifted a bottle of Jamaican Rum by the Consular Corps. It was obvious that I was going to gift it to Dad on his special
day. He was elated to have it. After his sad demise, to my disbelief, Dad had left a cabinet full of unopened foreign liquor bottles for me at home. But I wish he was around to give me company to have a drink with me one evening. But the bitter truth is that he is not around and this year and
every year I wish him a very Happy Birthday and Cheers to Him!
