Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray held the position of Chief Minister of Maharashtra between 2019 and 2022.  He’s someone I’ve known for a long time. However, I am unfamiliar with Uddhav Thackeray, the politician. I’m more familiar with Uddhav the photographer. He published a collection of aerial images of Maharashtra that I had never seen before nine years ago. It was named ‘Maharashtra Desha,’ and its pages exploded with incredible and magnificent images shot from the air that was as odd in composition as they were interested in their finding. Uddhav unburdened the joy of generating this beautiful coffee-tabler onto me over cold coffee, Vada Pav, Bhajiya, and Jalebi at the Mayor’s Bungalow.

First, he learned about his cameras’ panoramic lenses, broad angles, aperture sizes, and shutter speeds. He used to wear seven or eight cameras around his neck while he grabbed on for dear life in the chopper piloted by a seasoned IAF pilot at dizzying heights and in inclement weather. Permission from Delhi was required. Armed forces monitors followed them to ensure they did not breach any no-fly zones.

Uddhav remarked, “I attempted to represent a Maharashtra that had a fascinating yesterday, a developing today, and a bright tomorrow.” However, it was hazardous.

The helicopter door was open, they were flying at odd angles to capture strange shots, the wind was strong, and he was only fastened by a seat belt. “Arre baap re, it was a lot of fun!” he shouted.

The photographs took me from the craggy hilltops of the majestic Sahyadri range to the Raigad, Jaigad, and Poornagad forts, which are still as impregnable today as they were when the Marathas defended them; and Sindhudurg, Underi, Khanderi, Korlai, Padmadurg, and Murud-Jangira in the sea, which ensured coastal protection to the empire of Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Also included are places of worship, saints’ tombs, temples, and churches, the caves of Maharashtra with their elaborate hard rock carvings, landscapes, rivers, the lakes of Mumbai, the long concrete ribbon of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the architectural marvel of the Bandra-Worli Sealink, farmers tilling their fields startled by the clatter of the chopper, and the cities.

One snapshot depicted the Maharashtra government’s center of power, Vidhan Bhavan. Looking at the image longingly, Uddhav Thackeray expressed his hope that the Shiv Sena comes there soon.

Stories are the best way to communicate. If you want to know a person, know their story. You will understand the person, rather than going by the gestures and the dressing sense.

Do you also have a story that you want the world to know, then share it with us at submitstories.storyofsouls@gmail.com.

We are also giving mileage to young students who can be our young authors by  sharing their already written content with us, that will go live with their name credits.
