Sweet Corn Chicken Soup for Covid-like symptoms

Thankful not to be one of Covid’s new surging statistics, but finding myself with Covid-like symptoms over the weekend, I turned to Sweet Corn Chicken Soup for some comfort yesterday. It was my grandmother’s home remedy for all ills. She used to make it herself. Now, for Sweet Corn Chicken Soup all I have to do is call up the friendly neighborhood Chinese takeaway. 

Besides being my favorite soup (another is the French Onion Soup), Sweet Corn Chicken Soup is also perfect for this weather. As comforting as, say, Orange Pekoe tea in the morning, Nescafe in the afternoon, a Hot Toddy in the evening, and Drinking Chocolate at night. These are my indulgences in the rains. And the weekend was cold, dark, and rainy all right.

These fancies keep the congestion from my chest, the cold from getting into my head, and the chill from setting in my bones. Sweet Corn Chicken soup is also healthy. It is made from the most straightforward recipe. A flavorful chicken stock, egg drop that gives it texture, sweet corn kernels, shredded chicken simmered in sesame oil for the sweet-salty flavor, corn flour, soy vinegar, ginger, and garlic.

I can make it at home, of course. Not from one of those 2-minute sachets. That soup tastes plasticky. But from any of those easy-to-make recipes on the net. The cooking time is 20 minutes. That’s about how long the neighborhood Chinese takeaway took to deliver the Sweet Corn Chicken Soup home. I ordered it. And spent the 20 minutes waiting in relish. Today, I am a new man.
