The call of the Cuckoo …

The Indian Meteorology Department’s weatherman and his corporate counterpart Skymet have predicted a normal monsoon this year, but they aren’t saying when it will arrive. It will be early. End May-mid June. Take my word for it. Why am I so sure? Well, the pied crested cuckoo that announces the onset of the monsoon has been triumphantly doing so outside my window for a week.

It is a shy bird. Of reclusive habits. It hides among the branches and leaves of the trees and makes its call. You can hear it. But not spot it. It is like the IPL’s trumpet that makes a noise during the duller moments of the game. I have been following the IPL since its inauguration in 2007 but have yet to figure out where the trumpet is located among the stands. Same with the pied crested cuckoo.

This year I was lucky. It was right outside my window. Sitting among the barren branches of a Gulmohur that will flower in summer. Camouflaged almost. But for its plaintive cry. It has been there since. Warning me of a monsoon that isn’t on the horizon yet. It is a migratory bird. I don’t know where it comes from. Or where it will go once the rains begin. I wish it would stay. I am getting used to its racket. The call of a cuckoo is indeed, a blessing.
