The Governor to the rescue!

To my list of superheroes in everyday situations, I add the name of Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan. She’s the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry in case you don’t know. I didn’t. Until I read about how she saved the life of a passenger (an IPS officer of Additional Director General rank) on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Hyderabad early on Friday morning.

Dr. Soundararajan, who was a gynecologist before the BJP and politics took her aside from medicine, fortunately, heard the SOS on the IndiGo flight. Was there a doctor on board, the panicky air hostesses were announcing? It was 4 am. Brushing aside her sleep, Dr. Soundararajan rushed to the aircraft’s rear and found Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, the IPS officer, sweating profusely and incoherent.

The good doctor swiftly got down to work assisted by her ADC, a senior military officer in a crisp olive green uniform. She checked his vitals (as they say) and found Ujela’s heart rate had dangerously dropped to 39 beats per minute. Far from the 60 to 100 beats per minute of a normal resting adult. Dr. Soundararajan got Ujela out of the seat and lay flat on the floor. Then calmly opened IndiGo’s First Aid box.

While the other passengers anxiously prayed or shot videos, using whatever supportive drugs she could lay her hands on, Dr. Soundararajan stabilized Ujela’s breathing and brought his heart to normal. From Hyderabad airport, he was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with dengue. His platelet count was 14,000. In a normal healthy adult, it would range between 140,000 and 450,000.

Ujela later said gratefully, “She helped me like a mother. Otherwise, I would not have made it.” Dismissing the airline’s thanks, Dr. Soundararajan advised IndiGo to keep a ready-to-use First Aid kit on board always and verify its contents daily. She said CPR training was a must for all staff. And the passenger roster should make a note of doctors on board to answer an SOS. “I was awake at 4 am. Your call might have gone unnoticed,” she added.
