The Gulmohur outside my window

Last night while we were sleeping, the rains came. But not the monsoon. Oh no, there’s still time for that, confirms the weatherman. A week at least. What we got was a pre-monsoon shower. Without the razzmatazz of thunder and lightning. So, many of us missed it. The shower brought down the temperature, though. And it also brought down flowers from the old Gulmohur tree outside my window. This morning when I looked out, the compound was a blaze of orange. And wet. Like the Gulmohur had wept for the flowers it lost in last night’s downpour.

I think one of life’s blessings is having a window with a view. I can look outside mine for hours. Watching the cats sunning themselves. The Amazon fellow (who seems to live on the staircase), the dhobi, milkman and postman coming and going. Each arrival and departure announced by the creaking of the gate. This morning when I looked, the Gulmohur was still flowering brightly. Valiantly hanging onto its summer job of lighting up the city with its bright orange flame. That’s why it’s known as Flame of the Forest. Though referring to Mumbai as a forest is a joke.
