There is a unique kind of sorrow that comes from the people you love the most.
The people whose happiness feels intertwined with your own. The ones you would drop everything for without hesitation. The ones whose burdens become your burdens, whose struggles keep you awake, and whose needs somehow always find their way to the top of your priority list.
You show up.
You give.
You sacrifice.
Not because you expect applause, recognition, or repayment, but because loving them makes generosity feel natural. You do not keep score. You do not count the effort. You simply pour from your heart, even on the days when your own cup is nearly empty.
Yet there comes a moment when the weight of being overlooked becomes impossible to ignore.
When your presence is expected but no longer appreciated.
When your kindness is mistaken for endless availability.
When the care you so freely extend is rarely reflected back to you.
And that is where the ache begins.
Not because you are seeking validation, but because every heart longs to feel seen. To know that someone notices when it is carrying more than it can bear. To feel that its love is cherished rather than merely assumed.
Perhaps the most painful realization of all is discovering that, while you spent years making room for everyone else, you slowly disappeared from your own life.
You begin questioning yourself.
Was I asking for too much?
Did I care too deeply?
Was I wrong to believe that love would naturally inspire the same consideration in return?
But your capacity to love was never the problem.
Your kindness was never your weakness.
The lesson was never to love less.
The lesson was to stop loving others at the expense of yourself.
Because love should never require self-abandonment.
You can support people without carrying their entire world on your shoulders. You can be compassionate without becoming responsible for everyone else’s happiness. And you can have a beautiful heart without accepting a place in someone’s life where your presence is convenient, but your feelings are invisible.
The truth is that not everyone will recognize the value of what you bring into their lives. Some people become so accustomed to your love that they forget it is a gift, not an obligation.
But never allow their inability to appreciate you to become the reason you question your own worth.
You do not need to become cold to protect your heart. You do not need to stop caring to establish boundaries. You simply need to remember that your feelings matter, your needs deserve consideration, and your peace is worth protecting.
Because the saddest thing is not simply being taken for granted by others.
It is becoming so devoted to being everything for everyone else that you forget you deserve that same devotion, too.
You deserve the tenderness you offer so effortlessly to others. The patience. The understanding. The quiet reassurance that you matter even when you have nothing left to give.
And sometimes, the most transformative act of self-love is choosing not to abandon yourself while trying to keep everyone else from feeling abandoned.
The people who truly value you will not simply appreciate what you do for them; they will cherish who you are beyond everything you do.
One day, you may realize that love was never supposed to be an endless test of how much you could sacrifice. You were never meant to earn your place in someone’s heart by making yourself smaller.
You are allowed to have needs, to feel tired, to say no, and to be loved without having to prove your worth through constant giving.
Because real love does not ask you to disappear to make someone else feel whole.
Real love makes room for you, too. ❤️✨
About Lovely Basantwani

Some writers write to tell a story. Some write to make you pause and listen to the conversation within.
Lovely Basantwani is a reflective writer whose words often explore the quieter sides of being human — self-discovery, solitude, healing, relationships, resilience and the courage to keep becoming.
His writing has a simple yet powerful quality. He speaks directly to the reader, reminding them that solitude does not always mean loneliness, silence is not always strength, and rejection does not have to define our worth. Whether he is writing about happiness, inner conversations, karma or resilience, his message often comes back to one simple truth — growth begins when we stop running away from ourselves.
Lovely Basantwani’s writing invites us to slow down, look within and listen to the voice we often overlook — our own.
