“There’s no place like home,” Dorothy once said, a statement, an emotion echoed in the hearts of those who search for a space that whispers, “You’re finally where you’re meant to be.”
I wonder what home feels like. A warm, comforting place, opening arms to you, welcoming you with grace, making you feel like you belong there. A place where joy is in the air, the lights are dim. It does not hurt your eye. There are no unnecessary sounds to hurt your ears or head. It’s a calm place, one that allows you to be your true self. A place that accepts you for who you truly are. A place that makes you feel valued, accepted, respected and lets you do whatever you want and be whatever you want. It is a place that is generous to your soul and doesn’t often break you down. It is a feeling of belonging. A place where your presence feels waited. A place where you don’t feel neglected, a place where your presence is noticed, and felt. A place where there is no fear of what may happen next.
In this place, fear has no power. Here, you don’t have to shed many tears, and even if you embrace sadness, there is a shoulder for you. It is a place that lets you feel whatever you feel. It is a place where your voice is heard. It is a place where your feelings matter. It is a place where your feelings are not supposedly “invalid.” It is a place where you belong.
I write this beside the person I call ‘home.’ Yet, at this moment, I am here because I have nowhere else to go. I am crying. I am afraid. I feel lost, alone, neglected, and insignificant. It all hits me at once.
But at the end of the day, I have nowhere to go. But though I am lost in the moment I am living in, I believe tomorrow will be a better day. Maybe a day, where I find home and embrace home.
