In all my years as a newspaper editor, I have rarely come across a pair of accused killers whose alleged crime has generated as much revulsion as Pune’s Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary. According to the Pune Rural Police, the two are accused of conspiring to murder Siya’s fiancé, realtor Ketan Agarwal, by pushing him into a 400-foot gorge below Lohagarh Fort. The police are also examining rumours that Siya may have secretly married Chetan while continuing with her engagement to Ketan. A case that, if proved in court, would reveal a chilling level of deception.

The allegations hint of a sordid tale of passion and betrayal. The victim is dead. The accused await trial once the chargesheet is filed. But there is one irony that seems to have escaped public attention. If what the heartbroken Agarwal family believes is true, Siya and Chetan allegedly murdered Ketan so they could build a life together. Instead, they now find themselves under judicial custody inside Pune’s notorious Yerwada Central Jail. Not together. Separated. Confined in different barracks, with no freedom to meet, no private conversations, no happily-ever-after shared future to plan.

Jail is a great equalizer. Stripped of their phones, social media influence, and affluent comforts, Siya and Chetan are treated like other undertrials. Every inmate follows the same routine, eats the same dal, rice and chapatis, sleeps on the same basic mats and lives within the same harsh, unforgiving discipline of jail life. From a wealthy and comfortable lifestyle in Pune, they have gone to Yerwada’s grim corridors. Where they endure their situation alone. Alienated by family. Faced by an intense and outraged public backlash online and outside.

That is the reality replacing whatever plans Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary once believed they were making. Meanwhile, another reality remains unchanged. Ketan Agarwal never came home. And perhaps that is the cruelest reminder of all. Whatever fate awaits the accused will be decided in a court of law. But for Ketan, everything ended the moment he took that terrifying freefall into that gorge. The irony of the situation is close to a Greek tragedy. The very act allegedly meant to secure a future together may have ensured Siya and Chetan never truly share one again.
