…Three wishes of a dying King

After Alexander the Great, the ancient Macedonian ruler and one of history’s greatest military minds, had conquered kingdoms everywhere and returned to his country, he fell grievously ill. On his deathbed, the King of Macedonia and Persia summoned his generals and told them, “I will depart from this world soon, but I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail.”

Alexander’s first wish was that only his best physicians should carry his coffin to the grave. His second wish was even more bizarre. He wanted the path leading to the graveyard strewn with all his wealth including gold and precious stones. And Alexander’s third wish was that both his hands be kept hanging loosely outside the coffin. The surprised generals sadly agreed to abide by his wishes.

Then Alexander said, “I want my physicians to carry my coffin so that people know that in the face of death, even the best doctors have no power to heal. I want the road covered with my treasure so that people understand that material wealth acquired on earth will stay on earth. And I want my hands swinging in the wind so that people see we come to this world empty-handed and will go empty-handed.”

King Alexander meant, we leave the world empty-handed after our most precious treasure of all is exhausted – and that is Time. In this life, we can produce wealth in great amounts but we cannot produce Time – because it is limited. When we give someone our Time, we actually give a portion of our life to that person that we will never be able to take back. So spend Time wisely.
