Trains and railway yards

One of the nicer train journeys in Mumbai is the Harbour Branch’s railway service that runs along the city’s eastern coast. The train halts at some pretty little stations that still retain their British names. Like Cotton Green, Reay Road, Dockyard Road, and Sandhurst Road. They all have some history behind them. Running parallel to the railway is the new Eastern Freeway from the docks of South Mumbai to the oil refineries of the North. I have traveled this route frequently and always grabbed a window seat on the train and enjoyed the view.

My friend and former colleague Harshada Rege, a journalist with a photographer’s eye, took this picture from a train running on the elevated line between Dockyard Road and Sandhurst Road stations. Below it is a railway yard where disused rakes and entire outstation trains wait to be commissioned again. Looking like a boy’s toy set of trains. Highrise Mumbai is in the distance. Before it is some ancient three-story tenements that rattle when a train passes by. I have often wondered how the residents here sleep at night with a train going past every three minutes.

The Metro, for which the underbelly of Mumbai is being excavated, when it is finally operational, will be a blessing. Traveling in Mumbai from North to South and East to West will be easier. The stations won’t have the romantic names of the Harbour Branch. And the trains will be sealed air-conditioned compartments that glide silently on elevated tracks. I am looking forward to it. But occasionally I will still travel by the old Harbour Branch, the train noisily rushing by the eastern coast, stopping at stations like Cotton Green and King’s Circle.
