I just got double lucky with my bathing soap. I was always a Lifebuoy man. You remember Lifebuoy from Hindustan Levers? With the red and yellow packaging? A chunky bar of carbolic that had the distinct antiseptic smell of the hospital. You felt tingling fresh, clean, and disinfected after a Lifebuoy bath. It had a lively jingle which played on All India Radio that I identified with and can still sing – “Lifebuoy hai jahan tandoorusti hai waha!”
Lifebuoy was a sporty, masculine soap. Just as Pears is feminine. My father used it and his father and grandfather before him. I carried on the tradition. Till Hindustan Lever did away with the trusted octagonal carbolic bar and introduced a curvy new Lifebuoy Total in an attractive box. It smelled of mint and lime and herbs and God knows what else. It was marketed as a family soap. Not a health soap. I stopped using Lifebuoy overnight. If I wanted a perfumed soap, there was Lux.
Then Karnataka Soaps & Detergents, maker of the popular Mysore Sandalwood Bath Soap, introduced a Carbolic bar that looked like, smelled like, and felt like the old Lifebuoy. I bought my first bar skeptically. It was paisa vasool! Now Anchor, a name I associate with electrical switches, cables, fans, and lights, has come out with a germ protection soap that’s Lifebuoy in another avatar. I use both – Carbolic and Anchor. They leave me feeling clean and scrubbed. And smelling like my honest and hardworking father after he had a Lifebuoy bath.

Stories are the best way to communicate. If you want to know a person, know their story. You will understand the person, rather than going by the gestures and the dressing sense.
