Sometimes, rejection does not mark the end of a career. It can become the beginning of an entirely different journey.

Sushant Jha experienced rejection from almost 40 companies after completing his education. Born with a cleft lip and palate that affected his speech, he faced discrimination, bullying and repeated obstacles while pursuing his career. Instead of allowing these setbacks to define his future, he chose entrepreneurship with a social purpose.

Along with his brother Prashant, Sushant started the Padhega India Initiative (PII) in 2014. The initiative aimed to make books more accessible to students by promoting second-hand books through buying, renting and donating.

His story is not simply about starting a business after failing to find a job. It is about turning rejection into purpose and creating a model that connects affordable education with environmental responsibility.

Who Is Sushant Jha?

Sushant Jha is an Indian entrepreneur and social entrepreneur who co-founded the Padhega India Initiative with his brother Prashant.

His personal experiences shaped his approach to entrepreneurship. Born with a cleft lip and palate, he faced difficulties with speech and experienced discrimination and bullying. He nevertheless completed degrees in Engineering and Business Management.

His larger goal was simple: make knowledge more accessible to people who cannot easily afford expensive books.

When conventional employment opportunities did not work out, Sushant decided to create his own path.

From Rejection by 40 Companies to Entrepreneurship

After graduation, Sushant applied for jobs and was rejected by nearly 40 companies. For someone looking to begin a professional career, repeated rejection could easily become a reason to give up.

Instead, it pushed him to think differently.

His family did not have a business background, so entrepreneurship was not an obvious or easy choice. He had to figure out operations, procurement, distribution and funding while building the initiative from the ground up.

Rather than asking why companies were not giving him an opportunity, Sushant began asking a different question:

What if he created an opportunity that could also solve a problem faced by others?

That question eventually led to the Padhega India Initiative.

The Beginning of Padhega India Initiative

In 2014, Sushant and his brother Prashant started the Padhega India Initiative.

Their initial pilot project focused on South Delhi, where they began distributing second-hand books to students and people from economically weaker sections who could not easily afford expensive academic books.

The idea was straightforward. Books that were no longer needed by one student could become valuable learning resources for another.

Instead of allowing academic books to sit unused on shelves after examinations or graduation, PII sought to put those books back into circulation.

This created a social and environmental opportunity at the same time.

How Padhega India Initiative Works

Padhega India Initiative operates through a web-based, inquiry-driven model.

A person can enquire about a book they need. PII then uses its network of publishers, booksellers and distributors to find the requested book and arrange its delivery.

The initiative also works around three important options:

  • Buy second-hand books
  • Rent books
  • Donate books

This model can be particularly useful for students preparing for competitive examinations, where books may only be needed for a limited period.

Instead of purchasing expensive new books that may remain unused after an examination, students can access pre-owned books and return them to circulation.

PII also works to source rare second-hand books while focusing on their condition before they reach another reader.

Why Second-Hand Books Matter

Second-hand books can make education more affordable for students and families.

Academic books can be expensive, yet their useful life does not end when one student completes a course or examination. A book used by one student can continue helping several others.

This is particularly relevant for competitive examinations. Students often need multiple reference books during preparation but may have little use for them after the examination.

Book rental and resale can therefore create a cycle in which the same resource serves several learners.

The idea also has an environmental dimension. Reusing books reduces the need for producing new copies and gives existing paper products a longer life.

For Sushant, affordable education and environmental responsibility became two parts of the same mission.

The Green Count: Connecting Books With Environmental Responsibility

Padhega India Initiative created a Green Count to track the paper saved or reused through its activities.

According to the original story:

1 Green Count = 40 grams of paper reused or packaging avoided.

The initiative used this figure to communicate the environmental impact of circulating pre-owned books.

At the time this story was published, PII reported a Green Count of 11,725, representing approximately 469 kg of paper saved.

The concept gave customers another reason to think about what happens to books after they are no longer needed.

Starting a Social Enterprise From a 2 BHK Apartment

The early days were far from glamorous.

Sushant and Prashant started the initiative from their two-bedroom apartment. They had to manage everything themselves, from procuring books to handling operations and arranging distribution.

They eventually received support with areas such as initial capital, content writing and expansion.

Over time, the network grew to include around 40 to 50 second-hand booksellers.

The journey demonstrates an important aspect of entrepreneurship: a business does not always begin with a large office, a large team or substantial resources. Sometimes it starts with an idea, a small space and the determination to keep solving a real problem.

Overcoming Discrimination and Bullying

Sushant’s entrepreneurial journey cannot be separated from the challenges he experienced earlier in life.

His cleft lip and palate affected his speech, which exposed him to discrimination and bullying. Rejection during job interviews added another layer of difficulty.

These experiences could have made him withdraw from professional life. Instead, they became part of the motivation behind his decision to build something independently.

His story shows that entrepreneurship can sometimes emerge from circumstances that initially appear to be setbacks.

The challenge is not always to eliminate every obstacle. Sometimes, it is to find a different road around it.

The Challenges of Building a Social Enterprise

Starting a social enterprise comes with its own difficulties.

Sushant had to understand the market before expanding the initiative. He approached the business cautiously rather than rushing into expansion.

Managing books, sellers, customers and logistics required a system. At the same time, the initiative had to remain focused on its larger social purpose.

He also acknowledged another challenge that many entrepreneurs experience: isolation.

When someone spends considerable time building an idea, the journey can become lonely. Sushant recognised that this affected his confidence but viewed it as another challenge to overcome.

Expanding the Vision Beyond South Delhi

Although the initiative initially focused on South Delhi, enquiries began arriving from different parts of India.

The plan was to expand into the National Capital Region and eventually take the concept across the country.

Greater Noida was identified as an important area because of its large student population and concentration of colleges.

The long-term vision was much bigger: make affordable books accessible to students across India.

The Future Vision of Padhega India Initiative

The original vision for PII extended beyond physical second-hand books.

The initiative planned to explore additional educational resources, including e-books, audiobooks and cooperative libraries.

It also considered online tutorial services and an advisory platform that could help students explore and review educational institutions.

This broader vision reflects the idea that affordable education is not limited to selling a book. It can involve creating an ecosystem where students can access knowledge through different formats.

What Makes Sushant Jha’s Story Inspirational?

Sushant’s story stands out because his entrepreneurial journey began with rejection rather than privilege.

He was rejected by nearly 40 companies. He faced challenges related to speech and discrimination. His family did not have a business background. Yet he chose to build an initiative around a problem he believed could be solved.

The Padhega India Initiative brought together three ideas: affordable education, book reuse and environmental responsibility.

His journey is a reminder that rejection can sometimes redirect a person towards an opportunity they had never considered.

A closed door does not always mean the journey is over. Sometimes, it forces you to build another door yourself.

The Lesson From Sushant’s Journey

Sushant Jha’s journey is ultimately a story about resilience.

Rejection did not stop him. Personal challenges did not stop him. A lack of family business experience did not stop him.

Instead, he found a problem worth solving and built a social enterprise around it.

His journey reminds aspiring entrepreneurs that success does not always begin with an impressive opportunity. Sometimes, it begins with rejection, uncertainty and the decision to try something different.

The road may change, but the destination can still be worth pursuing.
