Ishq’s Musical Journey: How One Self-Taught Singer Turned Passion into Performance

Ishq is a self-taught Indian singer who began singing at age five, inspired by his parents’ love of Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Without formal training or consistent internet access, he taught himself through YouTube, performed in college with a borrowed microphone, and later participated in a Guinness World Record event tied to music director Pritam. Today he creates music content that resonates emotionally with audiences across platforms.

Where Music Begins: Not in a Classroom, But in a Home

Some people discover music over time. For Ishq, music was always present — a quiet emotion that shaped his childhood without asking for attention.

He began singing at the age of five. Not on a stage or in front of an audience, but within the comfort of home. His father would sing songs of Mohammed Rafi while his mother joined him with a softness reminiscent of Lata Mangeshkar. Those simple moments — no lessons, no rules, no expectations — became his first experience of music. Just voices blending together, creating something that stayed with him long after the songs ended.

As he grew, the melodies of Mukesh, Rafi, and Lata continued to shape him. These were not just songs. They felt like a part of his identity. Music was never something he had to learn to love. It was something he had always known.

“Music was never something Ishq had to learn to love. It was something he had always known.”

How Ishq Taught Himself to Sing: The YouTube School of Persistence

When it came to learning music seriously, the path was not easy. Ishq had no formal training, no guru, and no structured curriculum. What he had instead was curiosity — and an unbreakable willingness to figure things out on his own.

He turned to YouTube, watching videos closely, observing technique, and trying to replicate what he saw. It was not a smooth process. It involved mistakes, repeated attempts, and long hours of self-study. The challenges were also material: at times, he did not have regular access to a smartphone or the internet. In those moments, he would reach out to people around him, asking for just a few minutes to look up chords or understand a song better. Those small windows of access became invaluable learning opportunities.

He did not wait for perfect conditions. He worked with whatever was available.

“He did not wait for perfect conditions. He worked with whatever was available to him.”

The First Stage: An Imperfect Moment That Meant Everything

Ishq’s first real performance came during his first year of degree college. The setup was basic. Even the microphone needed someone to stand beside him and hold it throughout the performance. Yet in that moment, none of the imperfections mattered.

He chose to sing Emptiness by Gajendra Verma — a song about longing, about the hollow echo that follows loss. The performance was simple, raw, and honest. It was not about technical perfection. It was about expression.

He uploaded that performance to YouTube — not as a strategy, but as a way to preserve the moment. That video still stands today as a marker of where everything began.

A Guinness World Record Moment: The Distance Travelled

As time passed, Ishq’s journey unfolded in unexpected ways. One of the most memorable milestones was participating in a Guinness World Record event during the launch of the series The Forgotten Army, associated with celebrated music director Pritam.

For someone who once depended on borrowed phones to learn music, this moment felt almost unreal. It was a quiet but powerful measure of how far he had come — even if the journey had never followed a predictable path.

From Personal Passion to Public Connection: Creating Music That Resonates

Gradually, Ishq’s relationship with music evolved. What began as a private passion took shape as a form of expression that could reach others. He started creating content through covers, reels, and performances — moments that people could connect with on an emotional level.

It was no longer just about singing correctly or learning songs. It became about sharing emotions and creating experiences that linger. There is a visible difference between where he started and where he stands today: the confidence, the control, the clarity — all of it reflecting a journey lived in full.

What Ishq’s Story Teaches Us About Persistence and Progress

Ishq’s story is not defined by resources or opportunities. It is defined by persistence. He did not have everything he needed at the start — but he did not let that stop him. He learned with limited access, performed in imperfect conditions, and still chose to share his music with the world.

His journey is a reminder that progress does not always begin with the right setup. Sometimes, it begins with a strong enough desire to continue, even when things are uncertain.

Because while people may forget the details of a song, they rarely forget how it made them feel. And if his music can give someone even a brief moment of connection, then every small step along the way holds value.

“People may forget the details of a song. They rarely forget how it made them feel.”

Q1. Who is Ishq and why is his musical story inspiring?

Ishq is a self-taught Indian singer who began his musical journey at the age of five, inspired by his parents’ love of classic Hindi film music — particularly Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. His story is inspiring because he overcame real barriers: no formal training, limited internet access, and no professional mentorship. Despite these constraints, he performed on stage in college, participated in a Guinness World Record event, and built a growing music content presence online.

Q2. How did Ishq learn to sing without formal training or a music teacher?

Ishq learned to sing primarily through YouTube — watching performances, studying technique, and practising through repetition and self-correction. When he didn’t have consistent internet access, he would borrow phones from people around him to look up chords and songs. His learning was driven by patience, observation, and thousands of hours of practice rather than formal instruction.

Q3. What was Ishq’s first public performance and what song did he sing?

Ishq’s first public performance took place during his first year of degree college. He sang Emptiness by Gajendra Verma. The setup was minimal — someone had to hold the microphone for him throughout the performance — but the moment was meaningful and marked his transition from private singing to public expression. He later uploaded the performance to YouTube, where it remains available.

Q4. What challenges did Ishq face in his musical journey?

Ishq faced multiple challenges: he had no formal music training or mentor, no structured learning pathway, and at times no regular access to a smartphone or the internet. He also performed in his early days with very basic equipment. Rather than letting these barriers stop him, he improvised — borrowing devices, using limited access strategically, and building skill through consistent self-practice.

Q5. How is Ishq connected to a Guinness World Record?

Ishq participated in a Guinness World Record event during the launch campaign of the series The Forgotten Army, which was associated with renowned Bollywood music director Pritam. The event marked one of the most significant milestones in his musical journey — a testament to how far he had come from learning with borrowed phones.

Q6. Where can I watch Ishq’s music performances online?

Ishq’s first performance (Emptiness by Gajendra Verma) is available on YouTube   His more recent music content can be found on Instagram. He continues to create covers, reels, and original content for audiences who connect with emotionally resonant music.

Q7. What can we learn from Ishq’s journey as a musician?

Ishq’s journey teaches us that progress does not require ideal conditions. It requires persistence. Learning does not always begin with a teacher — sometimes it begins with a screen, a borrowed phone, and the willingness to try again. His story demonstrates that passion, combined with consistent effort even under limitations, can lead to meaningful creative growth and public impact.
